🎃 Things to Be Aware of During Halloween in Acadiana
Keep your little ghouls, goblins, and furry friends safe while having a frightfully fun time!
🍬 Welcome, Y’all — It’s Halloween in the 337!
October in Acadiana means pumpkins on porches, costume parades, and candy everywhere you turn. Our neighborhoods light up with excitement, and it’s one of the sweetest times of year for everyone around. But between the sugar rushes, candlelit pumpkins, and wagging tails underfoot, a little awareness goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.
I’m Alyson Finch, REALTOR® with District South by Real Broker, and I love seeing our communities come alive with fall fun. Here are a few friendly reminders to help you enjoy Halloween night with peace of mind... Acadiana style.
🧒 Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
Acadiana neighborhoods are known for being welcoming, but it’s essential to prioritize safety when those little superheroes and princesses hit the streets.
✅ Be Visible
Choose bright costumes or add glow sticks and reflective tape so drivers can see your child after sunset. A small flashlight or light-up necklace is always a good idea.
✅ Plan Your Route
Stick to well-lit streets and familiar neighborhoods. Many local communities, such as River Ranch, Sugar Mill Pond, and Broussard subdivisions, host organized trick-or-treat routes that are both safe and festive.
✅ Check the Candy
Before the little ones dive in, inspect all treats. Toss anything that’s open or looks questionable. Local events like Boo at the Zoo and Autumn in the Oaks are great for pre-screened candy fun.
✅ Supervise and Stay Alert
Younger kids should always have an adult nearby. If older children are going with friends, remind them to stay together, use sidewalks, and avoid cutting through yards.
🐾 Halloween Safety for Pets
Our fur babies may not understand the holiday spirit, so let’s make sure they enjoy the evening too.
🎃 Keep Pets Indoors
Costumes, loud noises, and constant doorbells can make pets anxious. Set up a quiet, comfy space away from the front door during trick-or-treat hours.
🦴 No Candy for Critters
Chocolate, gum, and xylitol (found in sugar-free treats) are toxic to dogs and cats. Keep candy bowls and goody bags out of reach.
🧙♀️ Choose Costumes Wisely
If your pet joins in the fun, make sure their costume fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision.
🐕 Watch the Door
With all the foot traffic, pets can easily slip outside. Use baby gates or keep them leashed when opening the door for trick-or-treaters.
🕯️ Home Safety and Neighborhood Awareness
A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your home safe and welcoming.
- Clear walkways of cords, decorations, or uneven surfaces.
- Replace dim porch bulbs with bright LEDs for visibility.
- Use battery-operated candles in pumpkins instead of open flames.
- Secure loose pets before opening doors to visitors.
- If you’re handing out candy, keep your driveway and path well-lit.
Alyson’s Tip: In Acadiana, neighbors often set up lawn chairs and visit while handing out candy — it’s one of our favorite community traditions. If you plan to join in, bring extra bug spray and maybe a thermos of coffee or cider.
